The King of Fighters coleção completa

The King of Fighters foi criado para ser um jogo que estrelasse todos os principais personagens da SNK, independentemente de qualquer detalhe cronológico ou canônico, um tipo de jogo que nos Estados Unidos é chamado de Dream Match (Luta Imaginária), assim como a série SNK vs. Capcom. Por exemplo: fosse este um jogo em que os detalhes cronológicos constassem, os personagens de Fatal Fury teriam de ser bem mais novos do que os de Art of Fighting, devido à série Art of Fighting tomar lugar vários anos antes da série Fatal Fury. E ainda Geese Howard não poderia aparecer em The King of Fighters, já que morreu na série Fatal Fury.

O sucesso causado pelo jogo inicial, KOF \'94, levou a SNK a realizar lançamentos anuais de The King of Fighters, nomeando os jogos de acordo com seu ano de lançamento, até o ano de 2003, pois a partir de 2004 a SNK passou a nomear os jogos de acordo com o seu número de lançamento (como em The King of Fighters XI, o décimo primeiro jogo da série), talvez para fugir da obrigação de lançamentos anuais. E assim The King of Fighters tornou-se uma série de videogames, com seus próprios detalhes cronológicos e canônicos.
